Peyton Manning, DeMarcus Ware won't travel to Chicago

ENGLEWOOD, Colo. -- After consulting with the team's medical staff, Denver Broncos coach Gary Kubiak said Friday that quarterback Peyton Manning and outside linebacker DeMarcus Ware will not make the team's trip to Chicago this weekend.

The Broncos will face the Bears on Sunday in Soldier Field, but Manning and Ware will spend at least part of the weekend at the team's complex in suburban Denver with a member of the Broncos training staff, who will not make the trip as well.

"[Rehab] is going to continue to be our focus this weekend. We're going to keep Peyton and DeMarcus back here with a trainer, stay focused on their rehab, have a good weekend with them getting healthy," Kubiak said. "Me and [head trainer Steve Antonopulos] talked [Thursday] night. This had been the thought process all week, away from ball, away from meetings, focus on getting healthy, so it's been that way with both of them."

Kubiak said Manning did come onto the field at one point during Friday's practice to watch the offense alongside Kubiak.

"[Manning] stood back there with me; we talked a little bit," Kubiak said.

Kubiak told Manning on Monday that Brock Osweiler would start against the Bears on Sunday and that Manning would use the week to concentrate on getting treatment from the team's medical staff for rib and left foot injuries. Manning was also treated for a right shoulder injury earlier this month.

Sunday will be the first start Manning has missed since he signed with the Broncos in 2012, and his streak of 57 consecutive starts is a franchise record. Other than when he missed the 2011 season after his fourth neck surgery, Manning had previously never missed a start in his 17 other seasons.

Sunday will also be the second consecutive game Ware has missed with a back injury.

Manning was in the Broncos facility every day this week for his treatments, but he did not attend the meetings for the quarterbacks or the offense as a whole.

"It was strictly rehab, him and DeMarcus," Kubiak said. "Was a total commitment to getting them healthy, spending time with [Antonopulos]."

Kubiak has said he will meet with Manning again on Monday to determine whether the quarterback will try to return to the practice field next week. The Broncos will face the New England Patriots on Nov. 29.
