With Brian Hoyer out, T.J. Yates will start at QB vs. Jets

NFL, Houston Texans, New York Jets

HOUSTON -- Texans quarterback Brian Hoyer returned to the practice field Friday for the first time since suffering a concussion that caused memory loss, but he will not play Sunday against the Jets.

Hoyer did not practice with his teammates. Instead he worked off to the side with a trainer. Hoyer was injured in Monday night's win over Cincinnati. T.J. Yates will start for Houston (4-5).

Texans receiver DeAndre Hopkins, who said Thursday he was 100 percent healthy, on Friday practiced for the first time all week and is expected to play Sunday. Hopkins did not practice Wednesday or Thursday while nursuing a knee injury.

"T.J. is a good quarterback; he threw me my first NFL touchdown, preseason against the Vikings," Hopkins said Friday. "He knows what he is doing. He is in here working extra to gain a better edge of this offense, and we are doing a good job of helping him out, doing things after practice and before practice with him."

Yates entered Monday night's game against the Bengals after Hoyer told coaches he was struggling to remember plays. Hoyer was then diagnosed with a concussion.

Yates threw the game-winning touchdown pass to Hopkins, the only touchdown scored Monday night in Houston's 10-6 win over the previously undefeated Bengals.
