Brian Hoyer dealing with third concussion of career, source says

NFL, Houston Texans, New York Jets

Houston Texans starting quarterback Brian Hoyer is not expected to play Sunday against the visiting New York Jets because of a concussion, a league source said.

Another source said Hoyer suffered the third concussion of his football career during Monday night's victory over the Cincinnati Bengals. The veteran signal-caller suffered one concussion in high school and another at Michigan State.

With Hoyer expected to be sidelined this weekend, recently signed T.J. Yates, who replaced him against the Bengals, would start.

With only two quarterbacks on their 53-man roster, the Texans added a third by claiming Brandon Weeden off waivers from the Dallas Cowboys on Thursday. Should the Texans decide to add practice squad QB Zac Dysert, the deadline to make that move for this week's game would be 4 p.m. ET on Saturday.

Hoyer suffered the concussion in the third quarter against the Bengals. He hit his head twice during one sack, once on the ground. After the hit, Hoyer experienced some memory loss.

"He wasn't functioning correctly as to how we know he would usually function calling a play, receiving the play in, trying to communicate it to the offense," Texans coach Bill O'Brien said. "So George [Godsey, offensive coordinator] pointed it out to me. When the series was over I went over to [Hoyer] and he just said, 'Look, I'm having trouble remembering the plays right now.'"

Hoyer then told backup Yates he would have to take over and then went into the locker room for evaluation.

In March, Hoyer signed a two-year, $10.5 million deal with the Texans, with $4.75 million fully guaranteed. He earns $31,250 for every game he's active this season.
