Bills place WR Percy Harvin on IR

The Bills placed wide receiver Percy Harvin on injured reserve Saturday, ending his season and perhaps his career in Buffalo.

The Bills activated cornerback Leodis McKelvin from the reserve/non-football injury list to fill Harvin's 53-man roster spot.

Harvin, who has not played since Oct. 11 and had been dealing with hip soreness since training camp, is scheduled to have knee surgery this week, sources told ESPN NFL Insider Adam Schefter on Sunday. The receiver intends to resume his career next season, sources said.

He did not travel with the Bills to London last month for what coach Rex Ryan called personal reasons and had already been ruled out for Sunday's game against the Miami Dolphins.

Rejoining Ryan and wide receivers coach Sanjay Lal -- who coached him last season with the New York Jets -- Harvin started the first five games of this season, catching 19 passes for 218 yards and one touchdown.

As a way for the cap-strapped Bills to spread out the impact of his $3 million signing bonus, Harvin signed a three-year deal in March, but the final two seasons of his deal will be voided if he's on the Bills' roster five days after the Super Bowl.

Harvin has played in all 16 games of a regular season just once -- in 2011 with the Minnesota Vikings -- and has grown increasingly frustrated with his knee and hip injuries, sources told ESPN last month.

McKelvin is expected to play Sunday for the first time since fracturing his ankle in a November 2014 loss to the Dolphins. The veteran cornerback was placed on the non-football injury list in July after his ankle needed more time to heal; he returned to practice last month.

Rookie cornerback Ronald Darby will retain his starting job despite McKelvin's return, Bills defensive coordinator Dennis Thurman said Thursday.
