EAST RUTHERFORD, N.J. -- New York Giants wide receiver Victor Cruz has been officially ruled out for Sunday's game against the Buffalo Bills, and there's no timetable for his return at this point, the team announced Thursday.
Cruz, dealing with a left calf injury, attempted to practice for the first time since mid-August on Wednesday but didn't make it very far.
"Victor tried it yesterday, and it did not feel right to him, and so he did not practice -- just a little bit at the very beginning," Giants coach Tom Coughlin said Thursday. "Obviously we're all disappointed in that. ... We'll get him back in rehab, get him back to work and see when we can get him back on the field."
Coughlin also confirmed that Cruz underwent another MRI.
This leaves the Giants with four healthy wide receivers on their active roster: Odell Beckham Jr., Rueben Randle, Dwayne Harris and rookie Geremy Davis.
Coughlin expressed confidence in Harris and Davis on Thursday but also did not rule out the possibility of adding another receiver.
The Giants have two wideouts on their practice squad, Tavarres King and Myles White. They also worked out former Giant Hakeem Nicks and former Patriot and Bronco Wes Welker on Tuesday.
When asked about Welker, who has a concussion history, on Thursday, Coughlin said, "He was healthy and he worked out well."
But Coughlin turned coy when asked whether the Giants could sign Welker.
"There's always a chance; there's a chance for anybody that's out there if a need comes around," Coughlin said.
