Ravens cut return specialist Asa Jackson among trim to 53

NFL, Baltimore Ravens, San Diego Chargers

OWINGS MILLS, Md. -- The Baltimore Ravens cut return specialist Asa Jackson in one of 17 moves to trim their roster to the mandatory 53-man limit Saturday.

Defensive end DeAngelo Tyson and offensive lineman Jah Reid were other notable veterans to be let go. Both were members of the Ravens' last Super Bowl team in 2012.

Jackson, a fourth-year cornerback, entered preseason as the favorite to handle the return duties formerly held by veteran receiver Jacoby Jones, who was released by Baltimore in the offseason. The 2012 fifth-round pick averaged a league-best 48.0 yards per kickoff return in the preseason, but fumbles in each of the final two games prompted Baltimore to go in a different direction.

Second-year receiver Michael Campanaro will likely handle punt return duties.

Other notable cuts included 2015 fifth-round guard Robert Myers, cornerback Cassius Vaughn, quarterback Bryn Renner, and running backs Fitzgerald Toussaint and Terrence Magee.

Baltimore placed rookie linebacker Zach Thompson on injured reserve.

Injured defensive end Brent Urban remained on the initial 53-man roster, leaving him eligible to be placed on injured reserve with the designation to return. Urban suffered a torn biceps last month, an injury that was expected to sideline him for at least 12 weeks.
