How Ohio State stacks up against best rosters since 2000

You might have heard: Urban Meyer and Ohio State return quite a bit of talent from their 2014 national championship roster. The Buckeyes are the unanimous No. 1 team in the AP poll -- and for good reason.

After having five members of last year's team drafted, six current Buckeyes are in my preseason Top 32, and 10 fall within my top 120 prospects entering the season. Both of those figures are best in the FBS -- the next-closest teams: Ole Miss (three Top-32 players) and Notre Dame (eight top-120 players).

We all tend to live in the now, so it's not surprising that my offseason has been filled with people asking me whether this Ohio State team has a chance to be one of the best I've seen. It's still really early in the process, but let's take a look at how the Buckeyes stack up against the three most talented teams I've evaluated: the 2001 Miami Hurricanes, 2004 USC Trojans and 2009 Alabama Crimson Tide.

2001 Miami Hurricanes

Remember this team? It ended up winning the national title ... and then having 38 players -- including an incredible 17 first-rounders -- get drafted over the next five years.

That, by itself, is incredibly impressive -- and probably something we're unlikely to see again. And then there's this: Almost all of the first-round picks, and a better-than-average percentage of the remaining guys from Rounds 2-7, went on to have highly successful NFL careers. A sampling of some of the best pros from that team is below. One word: Loaded.
