Philip Rivers would consider offseason offers, hasn't reached 'ultimate goal'

SAN DIEGO -- Speaking to reporters for the first time since speculation about a potential draft-day trade trade that would send him to the Tennessee Titans in exchange for the No. 2 overall pick and selection of Marcus Mariota, veteran San Diego Chargers quarterback Philip Rivers said he would love to remain with the organization long term.

"You put in 11 years here, and we haven't accomplished the ultimate goal," Rivers said. "There's been a lot of great memories, and a lot of awesome games, seasons, friendships, training camps and on and on.

"So that would be awesome [to stay]. Obviously, as players none of can choose how we all want it to work out. But if that's how it works out, I'd be fired up."

Rivers said there's nothing new regarding discussions on a contract extension between his representation and the team.

However, Rivers said he's willing to consider offers from the Chargers during the offseason. Asked if he anticipates having a new deal in place before the season begins, Rivers had this to say:

"I have no expectations at this point," Rivers said. "If there is something, y'all will be the first to get it."

Rivers is in the final year of his contract, which is scheduled to pay him $15.75 million in total compensation for the 2015 season. He previously indicated an unwillingness to engage in contract-extension talks, instead wanting to play out the contract.

Rivers also reportedly has heartburn over the possibility of playing in Los Angeles next season if the franchise relocates.

Moving Rivers via trade to the Titans offered a soft landing for everyone involved. The Titans would get a franchise quarterback, Rivers could relocate closer to his family roots in Alabama and the Chargers would have gotten their franchise quarterback of the future.

But the trade never materialized, and Rivers stayed in San Diego. Rivers talked about why he never publicly addressed the trade rumors to help squash speculation nationally.

"For me, you could have tried to say something and have an answer every other day," Rivers said. "It goes on forever. So I chose for the most part to stay quiet, let it all play out. And liked I hoped from early on this offseason, I was going to be the quarterback for the Chargers this season. And all signs point to that's going to be the case. So I'm looking forward to it."
