          Ed Reed is officially retiring, ending one of the best careers for an NFL safety.

          The Baltimore Ravens announced his retirement Wednesday evening and plan to hold a news conference honoring Reed on Thursday at 2 p.m. Reed will likely be inducted into the team's Ring of Honor this season.

          Reed, 36, made nine Pro Bowls and was named to eight All-Pro teams. He was the 2004 NFL Defensive Player of the Year and won a Super Bowl with the Ravens in 2012.

          Considered one of the best ball hawks in NFL history, Reed led the NFL in interceptions in three seasons (2004, 2008 and 2010).

          He played for the Ravens from 2002 to 2012. He bounced around from the Houston Texans to the New York Jets in 2013, and he was out of football last season.

          Reed playfully announced his retirement on Twitter on April 1, but he later acknowledged it was an April Fools' Day joke and deleted it.
