Giants trade up to take Collins with 1st pick in 2nd round

NFL, NFL Draft, New York Giants, Tennessee Titans, Chicago Bears

EAST RUTHERFORD, N.J. -- The New York Giants traded up to the top spot in the second round of the NFL draft Friday night and took Alabama defensive back Landon Collins in a move to shore up their defense.

The Giants sent their second, fourth and their second pick in the seventh round to the Tennessee Titans for the right to move up seven spots.

New York finished 29th overall on defense and Collins is a perfect fit shore up the back line of the secondary that gave up way too many big plays.

Collins was projected as a first-round pick by many and the Giants really need him. They lost Antrel Rolle and Stevie Brown to free agency and they only had two young inexperienced players on the roster, Nat Berhe and Cooper Taylor.

A run-stopping safety, Collins led the Crimson Tide with 103 tackles last season. He intercepted three passes, recovered two fumbles and forced another. The tackle total was a record for an Alabama defensive back.

The Giants took big offensive tackle Ereck Flowers with the ninth pick overall on Thursday night. He is the second offensive lineman to be taken by the Giants in the first round in the past three years.

There are still plenty of needs on defense for coordinator Steve Spagnuolo, who replaced the fired Perry Fewell.

New York needs a run stopper at tackle and a middle linebacker for the future.
