John Schneider on Russell Wilson's contract: We want him 'for a long time'

NFL, Seattle Seahawks

In an exchange with reporters Wednesday at the Seattle Seahawks facility, general manager John Schneider didn't have a lot to say about the ongoing contract negotiations with quarterback Russell Wilson, but he wanted to convey a positive outlook.

"I'm not going to get into specifics on Russell's situation other than to say that we all love Russell and we want him to be our quarterback for a long time," Schneider said.

Schneider was asked if he thinks those feelings are mutual.

"I do, yeah,'' he said.

On whether reporters could ask if things have gotten sticky in the negotiations, Schneider smiled and said, "No, you can't."

Wilson is in the final year of his rookie contact, which will pay him $1.5 million this season. But he is in the process of negotiating a deal that likely will pay him as much as $20 million a season and possibly $100 million overall.

"Every negotiation is unique in and of itself and this is no different," Schneider told KIRO (97.3 FM) radio earlier this month. "He's our quarterback. We'd love him to be our quarterback. But the thing is we need to keep as many of these guys together as we possibly can. What I can tell you is that this is the ultimate team sport. We have a track record of rewarding our players that we recognize as core players."
