Jaguars' Marcedes Lewis agrees to restructure final year of contract

NFL, Jacksonville Jaguars

JACKSONVILLE, Fla. -- Jaguars tight end Marcedes Lewis has restructured the final year of his contract, according to a league source.

Lewis' new salary and salary-cap figure are unavailable, but they are expected to be significantly less than they were scheduled to be in 2015. Lewis' salary-cap number of $8.2 million was the third-highest on the roster behind a pair of recently-signed free agents: tight end Julius Thomas ($10.3 million) and defensive end Jared Odrick ($9 million).

The signing of Thomas to a five-year, $46 million contract in March appeared to put Lewis in jeopardy of making the roster, and general manager David Caldwell said it was far from a guarantee that Lewis would be back for his 10th season.

"He's going to have to compete to be here," Caldwell said the day after Thomas signed.

Lewis redoing his contract makes it easier for him to remain. He will be a significant part of the offense because new offensive coordinator Greg Olson likes to use multiple tight end formations. Lewis, who has 315 career catches for 3,789 yards and 27 touchdowns, is a solid blocker and will be used as an inline tight end.

Lewis has never been a big receiving threat -- he has caught more than 50 passes just twice in nine seasons -- and he has battled injuries the past two seasons. A calf injury cost him five games in 2013; he missed eight games with a high ankle sprain in 2014.
