Nate Washington joins Texans

NFL, Houston Texans, Tennessee Titans

The Houston Texans signed veteran wide receiver Nate Washington on Wednesday.

Terms of the deal weren't announced.

Washington, who will be 32 before the season starts, played the previous six seasons with the Tennessee Titans.

He is the second receiver the Texans have signed in free agency, and both were with AFC South rivals last season. Houston also signed Cecil Shorts, a 27-year-old receiver who spent the first four seasons of his career with the Jacksonville Jaguars.

Washington caught 40 passes last season for 647 yards and two touchdowns last season. In Houston he'll be the oldest player, joining a receiving group that includes DeAndre Hopkins, Shorts, DeVier Posey, Keshawn Martin and Damaris Johnson.

The Titans signed Washington to a six-year free-agent contract in 2009, and he played in every game for them over the term of the deal.

In total, he caught 307 passes for 4,591 yards for a 15-yard average and 28 touchdowns.

Washington was a big influence on the Titans' young receivers, particularly Kendall Wright and Justin Hunter.

Originally an undrafted rookie free agent out of Tiffin University, Washington signed with the Pittsburgh Steelers in 2005.

He spoke emotionally at the end of the Titans' 2-14 season about the possibility of it being his final game with the franchise.
