Raiders release Antonio Smith

NFL, Oakland Raiders

In another sign of poor results from the 2014 free-agency period, the Oakland Raiders are releasing defensive lineman Antonio Smith.

Smith was set to count for $4 million against the salary cap in 2015.

He had 20 tackles last season and started every game. He was considered a leader on the team and it was expected he'd come back in a limited role. He had three sacks last season and has 44.5 in his 10-season career.

The Raiders are planning to start free-agent pickup Dan Williams and second-year player Justin Ellis at defensive tackle.

Smith is the fourth veteran pickup of 2014 who is no longer on the team, joining quarterback Matt Schaub (released, signed by the Ravens), running back Maurice Jones-Drew (retired) and defensive end LaMarr Woodley (released, signed by the Cardinals).
