Mike Nolan to be Chargers LB coach

SAN DIEGO - Chargers coach Mike McCoy is expected to hire longtime NFL defensive coordinator Mike Nolan as San Diego's new linebackers coach, the team announced Thursday.

The two sides have agreed to terms, but Nolan's contract has not been signed yet.

"Mike is a tremendous coach with a wealth of experience, and he'll be a great addition to our coaching staff," McCoy said. "I've known him for many years having coached both with him and against him, and it's great to have him here with us, with the Chargers."

Nolan served as the defensive coordinator for the Denver Broncos in 2009 when McCoy served as the team's offensive coordinator.

Nolan will replace Joe Barry, who departed to become the defensive coordinator for the Washington Redskins. Nolan, 55, served as the defensive coordinator for the Atlanta Falcons from 2012-14, and he brings extensive experience working with a 3-4 defensive front -- the same scheme current Chargers defensive coordinator John Pagano runs.

Nolan has worked 17 seasons as a defensive coordinator in the NFL, and he also served four seasons as the San Francisco 49ers head coach from 2005-08.
