Ranking the head coach hires

NFL

New England's Bill Belichick and Seattle's Pete Carroll finished 1-2 when 30 NFL insiders graded the head coaches heading into the 2014 season. Their teams face one another in the upcoming Super Bowl, but the applause was not universal the day each man was hired. There were plausible reasons to question whether either man ultimately would succeed -- so many factors come into play.

That context will be key in assessing the head coaches hired this offseason. While it's obviously too early for grades, I've put the six hires in order based on initial impressions. The other opening, in Atlanta, remains unfilled amid expectations Seahawks defensive coordinator Dan Quinn will take the job after the Feb. 1 Super Bowl. I'll offer a few thoughts on that one as well.

1. Denver Broncos: Gary Kubiak
