Chan Gailey is the new offensive coordinator of the New York Jets, after all.
One day after talks between the two sides reportedly were at an impasse, the Jets made it official late Tuesday, announcing Gailey as the first hire on Todd Bowles' coaching staff.
Gailey, 63, was the odds-on favorite to land the job, and it was widely reported last week that a deal was imminent. But there was a report over the weekend that the Jets were cooling on Gailey, who Monday told ESPN that "everybody made it seem like a done deal -- everybody except me. ... Nothing's happened yet."
The Jets hammered out a deal on the eve of Bowles' introductory news conference. Bowles and new general manager Mike Maccagnan will meet the media at 11 a.m. ET Wednesday.
Gailey becomes the Jets' fourth offensive coordinator in the last five years. He replaces Marty Mornhinweg, who held the position for two years under Rex Ryan.
After two years out of football, Gailey inherits a unit that finished 28th in scoring and 22nd in yards. His No. 1 responsibility will be trying to fix the turnover-prone Geno Smith, who has 34 interceptions in 29 career starts.
Gailey last coached with the Buffalo Bills, from 2010 to 2012. He was fired after compiling a 16-32 record. Before that, he was a head coach at Georgia Tech (44-32) and the Dallas Cowboys (18-14).
This will be his fifth job as an offensive coordinator. Previously, he worked for the Kansas City Chiefs, Miami Dolphins, Pittsburgh Steelers and Denver Broncos.
Gailey has never worked with Bowles, but they got acquainted last year when Bowles reached out while he was interviewing for head-coaching jobs. They re-connected again recently, when Bowles became a hot head-coaching candidate.
