Alex Smith has sprained shoulder

NFL, Kansas City Chiefs

KANSAS CITY, Mo. -- Quarterback Alex Smith has what the Chiefs are calling a sprained throwing shoulder. Coach Andy Reid was optimistic Smith would be available to work on Wednesday, when the Chiefs begin their practice week, then play on Sunday against the New York Jets at Arrowhead Stadium.

"He should be fine," Reid said. "We'll just see. He was tender today, but he's upbeat about it. We did all the precautionary things, looking at it. We just need a little time get the soreness out of there."

Smith was injured near the end of the first half of Sunday's 34-7 win over the St. Louis Rams. He was sacked on each of the Chiefs' final two offensive plays of the half.

He played the rest of the game with the injury until he was relieved for the final three snaps by backup quarterback Chase Daniel.

"He just kind of landed on it," Reid said. "It's probably more of a bruise than anything. It was tender."
