What's hot in NFL this week

Unless you're plugged in with NFL sources, it's impossible to stay on top of everything going on in the fast-paced NFL world. To get you up to speed, ESPN.com brings you the Friday Five, in which we revisit five trending topics and stories from the week that was in the league.

This past week, we flocked to the water cooler to discuss Peyton Manning's ascent to the TD throne, Percy Harvin landing in New York and J.J. Watt's pursuit of greatness.

1. Peyton ascends to NFL's TD throne

Super Bowl shortcomings notwithstanding, Peyton Manning continues to supply credence to claims he's the greatest quarterback in NFL history. The latest piece of evidence came this past Sunday, as the Denver Broncos All-Pro usurped Brett Favre as the NFL's career leader in scoring passes. ESPN.com revisited several of Manning's most notable scoring milestones and caught up with those on the receiving end of those indelible moments during Peyton's march to 510.

2. Greatness is all that matters to Watt

J.J. Watt has it all: immense talent, a lucrative new contract that makes him the highest-paid defensive player in the league, the respect of coaches and peers across the league and a penchant for delivering MVP-worthy performances. What he continues to chase is greatness -- both for his team and himself. The Houston Texans All-Pro envisions himself in the pantheon of NFL greats one day, and Ashley Fox writes that nothing will stop him from making that a reality.

3. Let's make a HUGE deal

Could you picture Tom Brady hoisting the Lombardi trophy in a non-Patriots jersey? We can (sort of). While NFL GMs might be reluctant to go big at the trade deadline, Greg Garber makes his annual dive into the trade market, proposing four hypothetical, splashy deals that could enhance the fortunes of each team involved.

4. Harvin is Big Apple's newest attraction

The Seahawks and Jets didn't wait for the deadline to pull off a trade stunner. Last Friday, Seattle shipped off mercurial receiver Percy Harvin to the talent-starved Jets in exchange for a conditional 2015 draft pick. With Harvin on board, the Jets' offense inherits a potential game-breaking threat to pair with developing quarterback Geno Smith, but the move might be too little too late for embattled coach Rex Ryan.

5. We're talkin' playoffs

It's never too early to engage in postseason discussion, and with surprises up and down the standings (hello, Seattle), this year's playoff race promises to offer added entertainment value. Tuesday Morning Quarterback offers an in-depth look at each team's playoff odds after seven games, based on historical precedence.
