Backup QBs who could start in '15

NFL

The word in personnel circles is that the 2015 NFL draft will not feature a strong senior class at the quarterback position. Top underclassman prospects Marcus Mariota and Jameis Winston figure to get plenty of attention if they decide to come out, although Winston obviously carries with him some significant off-field concerns.

The NFL free-agent class for 2015 isn't looking very pretty, either, but there are some intriguing names on the list as well as some quarterbacks who could be available for trade. And some of them, due to depth chart changes, will get a chance to compete with their current team for the starting job next season.

What follows is a look at some names of backup QBs who could be in the mix for starting gigs in 2015, or perhaps further down the line, based upon my conversations with people inside the league.

Note that Austin Davis -- as the default starter in St. Louis -- is not on this list, but the pending restricted free agent will be in the mix for a starting gig for the Rams (or elsewhere) next preseason, possibly in a West Coast-oriented scheme for which sources have told me he is best fit.
