Dennis Pitta again has hip surgery

OWINGS MILLS, Md. -- Baltimore Ravens tight end Dennis Pitta underwent season-ending hip surgery Monday afternoon, coach John Harbaugh said.

The Ravens are unsure whether the injury, which is the same right hip Pitta had surgery on last year, is potentially career threatening.

"I don't know the ramifications of that long term," Harbaugh said. "We have to be really hopeful for Dennis' return, and I'm sure we'll learn about that in the coming weeks."

Pitta, 29, was the Ravens' second-leading receiver this season with 13 catches for 113 yards. He signed a five-year, $32.5 million contract, which included $16 million guaranteed, seven months ago.

In Sunday's 23-21 win over the Cleveland Browns, Pitta twisted his back to catch a pass and then couldn't put all of his weight on his right leg, falling to the ground without being hit.

"I don't know how that can happen," Harbaugh said.

The loss of Pitta will hurt the Ravens in the red zone and on third downs. The Ravens now will rely on two-time Pro Bowl tight end Owen Daniels as well as second-year fullback Kyle Juszczyk.

"The fact that we can have Kyle who can swing in there and play different positions is a big plus for us," Harbaugh said. "Then, you have to adjust your offense. We're going to play our good players. So, who's on the field is going to depend on who our good players are and how the coaches decide to attack."

Harbaugh indicated the Ravens are looking at available tight ends who could take Pitta's roster spot.
