Drew Stanton to start against 49ers

NFL, Arizona Cardinals

TEMPE, Ariz. -- Arizona Cardinals backup quarterback Drew Stanton will start Sunday against the San Francisco 49ers, coach Bruce Arians announced Friday.

Stanton will make his second straight start as Carson Palmer continues to recover from a bruised nerve in his right shoulder.

If Palmer can play Sunday, Arians said he'll be the backup and third-string quarterback Logan Thomas will be deactivated. If not, Thomas will back up Stanton for a second straight week.

"Nobody is in the dark about who's going to be the starting quarterback," Arians said.

Palmer has made progress this week but he still can't make the most critical move for a quarterback.

"No, he cannot throw," Arians said. "He's improved dramatically but he still can't throw."

Stanton was 14 for 29 for 167 yards in a 25-14 win over the New York Giants on Sunday, his first game action in 1,365 days.

Stanton, 30, last started back-to-back games in weeks 13 and 14 of 2010 with the Detroit Lions. He won both of them, which were part of three-straight starts during which he went 2-1.
