FSU less talented than last season

The big story out of Tallahassee this week is the suspension of Florida State Seminoles quarterback Jameis Winston for Saturday night's matchup against Clemson (8 p.m. ET, ABC), following his obscene public outburst on campus Tuesday. I won't get into this latest incident and what it could mean for his draft stock whenever he comes out -- my colleagues Mel Kiper and Todd McShay did a good job of covering that already, here, here and here.

But what this event distracts from is just how good this FSU team is this season, as the Noles sit atop the AP and coaches' polls in addition to ESPN Insider's initial College Football Vegas Rankings.

It's pretty remarkable considering seven starters off of last year's BCS title team were drafted last May, and it is a testament to how well head coach Jimbo Fisher and his staff have recruited and developed players over the past few years.

There is no question that this is a loaded roster, but is Florida State even more talented this year than it was a season ago? After studying the tape and comparing the two teams, I feel that the answer is no, even though it's close. Here's a look at the positions where the Noles are better or worse than last year, and why overall I think they're a notch below last season's team based on talent.
