Coach: John Abraham not cleared

Arizona Cardinals coach Bruce Arians said outside linebacker John Abraham has not been cleared to return from a concussion suffered in Week 1.

Arians made the statement on his weekly SiriusXM NFL Radio appearance Tuesday night.

According to a tweet from the show's host, Alex Marvez, Arians said Abraham did not pass the NFL's concussion protocol Tuesday and would try it again Wednesday. Arians announced Monday that Abraham would return from a week-long leave of absence Tuesday. The Cardinals host the San Francisco 49ers on Sunday. If Abraham is cleared to play by then, Arians said he'll return to the starting lineup.

During his Monday press conference, Arians said the NFL's active sack leader went to a neurologist Monday to begin the final stages of the concussion protocol.

"He's more than ready," Arians said. "We just go to get him to pass the concussion protocol. He did not pass today. We'll have to wait and see when we can do it again. Hopefully we'll have him for this week. But he's excited.

"When you get that first concussion, and he had a big one, I think it shakes you up sometimes and he thought real hard about it and he's talked to a bunch of different folks, me included, and stepped back and I think the rest and just sitting back this weekend, staying home, he missed it a lot. He's more than ready to roll for down the stretch."

Abraham suffered his first reported concussion, according to ESPN Stats & Information, during the third quarter of Arizona's win over San Diego on "Monday Night Football" in Week 1. A day later, Arians and Abraham discussed Abraham's future with the five-time Pro Bowler telling his coach he "wasn't in it" and he took a five-day leave of absence.
