NFL

WASHINGTON -- The NFL players' union has increased pension benefits for 1,722 former players who played in the league from 1993 through 1996.

Those players generally will have their monthly pension benefits for each of those seasons increased to $363 per month from $265 for 1993 and '94. The previous payments for 1995 and '96 were $315 per month.

Also, 456 players from among the same 1,722 will have their monthly pension for credited seasons earned before 1993 increased to $363 per month.

The special credit announced Monday will take effect starting next Monday, Sept. 1 and is funded through a provision in the 2011 collective bargaining agreement. At a cost of $35.4 million, the increase is being funded over three years.
