Brady sits out Patriots-Redskins preseason opener

LANDOVER, Md. -- The New England Patriots' preseason opener was a night off for Tom Brady.

The Patriots planned to start backup Ryan Mallett for Thursday night's game against the Washington Redskins.

Brady already had plenty of work against the Redskins this week. The two teams held three days of joint practices at Washington's training camp.

As expected, Redskins announced that receiver DeSean Jackson was not expected to play. Jackson injured his left ankle during Wednesday's practice.

Among others sitting out for the Redskins were receiver Pierre Garcon, safety Ryan Clark and safety Phillip Thomas -- all nursing hamstring injuries.
