CINCINNATI -- The Bengals added to their offensive line Friday, signing unrestricted free-agent tackle Marshall Newhouse.
Newhouse comes to the Bengals after spending the last four seasons with the Green Bay Packers. Even though he was a backup, the 2010 fifth-round draft pick appeared in all but one of the Packers' games the past three years, including all four of their playoff games in that stretch. He started just two games in 2013, receiving 234 snaps of playing time.
Cincinnati signed Newhouse in hopes of adding to its depth at the tackle position. The Bengals lost backup tackle Anthony Collins during the first week of free agency, when he signed with Tampa Bay.
Collins had been backing up Pro Bowl left tackle Andrew Whitworth and occasionally playing right tackle behind Andre Smith. The Bengals believe Newhouse could play either position, too.
"Marshall has played a lot of football for Green Bay. He'll be a quality addition to our line," Bengals offensive line coach Paul Alexander said. "He's played left tackle and right tackle and has experience in big games."
Newhouse also brings some measure of familiarity to the Bengals' offense. He was quarterback Andy Dalton's left tackle when the two were teammates at TCU. They played three seasons together, going to a bowl game each year.
The Bengals also announced they waived quarterback Greg McElroy, who tweeted earlier Friday that he was retiring from the NFL.
