Eddie Lacy added to the Pro Bowl

NFL, Green Bay Packers, Minnesota Vikings

GREEN BAY, Wis. -- The Green Bay Packers won't be shut out of the Pro Bowl after all.

Running back Eddie Lacy, a first alternate who was the closest thing the Packers had to a Pro Bowler when the selections were announced last month, was added to the roster Wednesday. He replaced Minnesota Vikings running back Adrian Peterson, who pulled out because of an injury.

It was the first time since 2005 that the team didn't have a player selected to the Pro Bowl.

Now, Lacy becomes the first Packers running back to be selected to the Pro Bowl since Ahman Green in 2004 and their first rookie running back to make it since John Brockington in 1971.

"I was extremely excited to hear that I am getting to go to the Pro Bowl after my rookie season," Lacy said in a statement released by the team. "I feel like it gives me a great opportunity to thank my teammates, especially the offensive line and coaches, for working with me and helping me accomplish what I did on the field this year."

Lacy broke Brockington's team rookie rushing record on the way to a 1,178-yard season. He also set franchise rookie records for rushing touchdowns (11) and carries (284) and tied the team's rookie record for 100-yard rushing games with four.

On Tuesday, Lacy was selected as the Pro Football Writers of America rookie of the year, and he is a leading candidate for the NFL's top rookie honor, offensive player of the year, which will be announced on Feb. 1.

There's still a chance the Packers could send other players to the Pro Bowl. Seven others were named alternates last month. They were: quarterback Aaron Rodgers, fullback John Kuhn, guard Josh Sitton, linebacker Clay Matthews, receiver Jordy Nelson and cornerbacks Sam Shields and Tramon Williams. However, none was a first alternate at his position.
