Mike Munchak, CEO to meet Friday

NFL, Tennessee Titans

Tennessee Titans coach Mike Munchak will meet Friday morning with team president and CEO Tommy Smith to engage in an organizational evaluation, sources say, during which Munchak could learn his fate.

Munchak's job has been the source of speculation as the team missed the playoffs for the fifth straight time.

In three seasons since Munchak succeeded Jeff Fisher as coach in 2011, the Titans have finished 9-7, 6-10 and 7-9.

League sources said general manager Ruston Webster also will be involved in the meeting with Smith, who sent his plane from his home base in Houston for what is expected to be day-long organizational evaluations.

It is not known if Smith has already made a decision on Munchak's fate or whether he wants to hear about the plan going forward that would involve staff changes.

Smith became the team president/CEO in October after the death of Bud Adams, who was 90. Smith is the son-in-law of Adams.

Besides his role with the Titans, Munchak is also one of Penn State's top three candidates to fill its coaching vacancy, sources told ESPN's Brett McMurphy.

Munchak and the Titans have had to overcome uncertain quarterback play, primarily due to the injuries of Jake Locker, the team's first-round pick in 2011.

Locker led the Titans to a 3-1 record and the team had no turnovers before he suffered an injured hip and knee. He returned only to get hurt again and be lost for the season.

The Titans were also competitive against quality competition. They lost six one-possession games, and seven of their nine losses were against teams that finished with 10 wins or more.

Munchak has been with the franchise since he began his Hall of Fame career as a guard with the Houston Oilers and played with the franchise from 1982-93. He then began his coaching career with the Titans in 1994.
