Look...I understand that it must suck to hear people minimizing your championship. I don't think anyone likes it....The St. Louis Cardinals were hardly the best team in baseball last year and snuck into the playoffs...then ran the table. It makes for an exciting playoffs but it doesn't mean they were a great team....just one that got hot at the best time possible. Everyone wants to have a championship and a team they can say was the best. You got the championship...but otherwise an average team that won't make anyone's best team lists.

harster007
honestly, it's all too funny... I don't care if you minimize the championship to your level... it doesn't matter History books will still have the Giants as Super Bowl Champions and are the best team left standing at the end of it all... and beating the previous year's Champion.... minimizing the run, is afterall the only thing sore losers can do now.

Def true about getting hot at the right time to launch into the post season. But once you're in the playoffs, usually all the teams even those sneaking in, are good/dangerous enough to have won enough out of 16 to be there. by the time its conf title and superbowl time, i dont really remember any 2 teams both simply being there by luck, so when you win the superbowl, you have typically earned the right to be there. Giants won their last 6 in this case, one heck of a run for a team to not be among the best, if not THE best. 31 other teams didn't get sb rings, 2 got conf rings, the rest, congrats on the division, better luck next year.

The Eagles definitely have the talent, it's all a matter of them putting it together. If they can do that, even as a Giants fan, there's certainly a chance they are the team to beat.

And that got you a front row seat to watch the playoffs. Division records mean very little if you can't make the playoffs.

Yeah, being the most feared team in the division? That and a dollar will get you a cup of coffee. It certainly will not get you a Lombardi trophy, as I'm sure you know by now.

9-7.....last year and then got hot. Nice run but hardly the stuff of legendary teams. The great teams don't sneak into the playoffs only because the rules say an NFC East team had to be represented. There isn't a soul alive outside of blue shirted New Yorkers who thinks this team is even in the top ten teams for 2012. Kinda shows that everyone believes the 9-7 thing is the real deal and the playoff run was the fluke.

What about the Packers the year before? They did the same thing the Giants did but everyone was down on their knees worshiping them at the start of last year.

When they are healthy they are a contender. I saw a couple power rankings on a couple different sites and they all seem to think the Giants are the best team in the league. I don't think they all live in NY.

Giants2011777
We all heard the same in 2007 and after the Giants won the bowl they went 12-4 the following season and ended as the #1 seed. What did that #1 seed and 12-4 record get them? Nothing! Once your in the postseason the regular season means nothing. Average teams don't win superbowl. You should ask the 15-1 Packers, 13-3 49ers and 13-3 Pats how average the Giants are.

strongisland...you caught lightning in a bottle last year...just enjoy it! Relish how the impossible came true and don't ruin it by attaching it to delusions of greatness. You have an average team. Your season will be average as well. But you'll always have last year!

Yes the Giants were so lucky to have......... 1) The toughest schedule in the NFL (and again this year actually) 2) 15 Players on injured reserve including your starting MLB & CB. 3) Having to play 9ers, Eagles, Saints, Packers in consecutive weeks without a healthy Tuck or Osi or Boley. And everyone says they are lucky because of a rookie diving like 10 yards to force a fumble in the game of his life? The one piece of real luck we got was the punt that bounced off Kyle Williams knee in the 4th qtr. THAT'S IT. Everything else was EARNED.

Parcells won 2 SB's in 8 yrs, Coughlin has won 2 SB's in 8 yrs. It seems like the argument can be made that Coughlin is a better coach than Parcells.

I was one of his biggest detractors in the beginning. His whole mantra was discipline and the Giants O line was one of the most penalized in football his first 2 or 3 seasons. He was always fighting with the players. And the offensive play-calling was HORRIBLE. He would take his foot off the gas late in games or run on 3rd and long. Drove me nuts. They eventually became more disciplined and he even lightened up. His legacy will be that he was a master motivator. They won more big games when they HAD to then not. They also won a lot of huge games with subs. Sure they were 9-7 but this team was decimated by injuries.

This team will have the best D-line and defensive backfield in the NFL next season. That's what we need to beat the Niners who went nuts revamping their receiving corps.
>
strongisland06
The d-line is scary good. JPP,Tuck, Osi get all the attention. But we have some solid interior lineman. Linval Joseph is a beast in the middle, Canty plays solid at d-tackle. We added Shaun Rodgers and brought back Rocky bernard. And the sleeper is Marvin Austin, if he stays healthy and plays like he did at UNC, we are set to punish opposing qb's Also it's nice to have Kiwi come in at d-end on passing downs.

First 9-7 team to win the super bowl. I'll take that every season

Azzollip
Coughlin is a good coach, but Parcells gets the nod as NYG's best. First, he had to compete against Coach Gibbs, Coach Walsh and Coach Landry and still won two Super Bowls. Second, the two Super Bowl teams were relatively dominant, the first going 14-2 and the second going 13-3 (not to mention winning the Super Bowl that season with a backup QB and ending the season for the 49ers in San Francisco when the world expected a three-peat). Third, and it may make a good future story for Ohm to write if he can actually get someone to talk to him about it, it is very likely that it was no coincidence that Parcells left around the same time that Tim Mara (the younger) was selling his half of the team to Bob Tisch (suggestion is that T.M. was Bill's ally upstairs, unfortunately T.M. also was ill at the time). Maybe Coughlin can "equal" him someday if he wins another Super Bowl, but he won't surpass Parcells.

I would make the argument that the team's weakness in the regular season last year shows him to be a BETTER coach than if he had a juggernaut that rolled over everyone in their path, like Parcell's SB winners did.
>
Azzollip
You could make that argument, but you would be wrong. The 1990-1991 team was actually an underdog in the NFC Championship (at San Francisco) and the Super Bowl (vs. the best of the Bills teams in the 1990's). As for the 1986-87 team, all throughout the playoffs (49ers, Redskins) John Madden predicted the Giants would lose. Also, don't forget that the coaches he beat in 1986 are Walsh and Gibbs, two Hall of Famers, and in 1990-91 he beat Marv Levy (also a Hall of Famer) in the Super Bowl.

He won't surpass Parcells in my mind because his two wins in the superbowl were direct results of a drop and a helmet catch. His teams play medicore in the regular season then have the luck of the irish in post season play. I give him credit for riding the wave, but he has come closer to being fired than Parcells ever came.

consistently mediocre? 2 superbowl wins? playoffs 5 of 8 seasons? last year they missed the playoffs at 10-6 (a better record than several of the playoff teams). and they play in one of the consistently tough divisions. Hardly the definition of mediocre
343 Days ago
>
Nyberg1983
I agree that Parcells may be the better coach, but to say Coughlin's win were the direct results of a drop and a helmet catch is a little off. First, you could argue Parcell's second win was the result of a missed field goal (the same kind of "luck" as a drop or helmet catch). Second, the drop you speak of was players not executing, a bad throw (Brady) and a bad catch (Welker), which is the game of football, you could probably pick out so many other moment sin the game where a lack of execution would have changed the game completely. Third, and most importantly, without the good coaching, the Giants would not have been in a position to have a missed catch and helmet catch win the super bowl.

That being said, I'd take him as a coach ANY day, as long as Belichick and a a couple of others weren't available.

Coughlin's accomplishments are not diminished because of "lucky" plays because, in the end, his players were in position to make those plays and that is what coaching is all about. He is a very good coach, and perhaps one day will equal Parcells, but he won't surpass Parcells.

Grabs1991. I don't think he said it was all luck. But when your team is consistently mediocre year after year, it has to say something about your coaching. They played well at the right time 2 of the last 5 years, which is awesome, but to be an all-time great you need more than just that.

The Patriots average 12 wins per year over the last 11 years and make the playoffs every year (minus 1 yr). 8AFCE Titles, 5 SB appearances, 3 SB wins. The Giants have played them well, no doubting that. Not sure where you are going with your comment because Coughlin is not as good as Belichick.
