Cheryl Miller, considered one of the greatest women's basketball players of all time, has been named the women's basketball coach at Cal State Los Angeles.
The Division II school announced the hire Friday.
"Graduating and developing women of inspiration and substance is my goal," Miller said in a statement. "Cal State LA is the perfect place for that mission."
Cal State L.A. finished 10-17 in 2015-16, a second straight losing season that led to former coach Carter Shaw's dismissal.
"Obviously we're going to have to change the culture, the mindset and raise the bar," Miller told The Press Enterprise of Riverside County. "Once I'm able to sit down with the players and have that face-to-face and really just find out their thoughts, you've got to find out who the players are, find their skill set, see what they're comfortable doing and see if you can raise that. See if you can motivate and challenge them to be better than even they feel they can be."
Miller had spent the past two seasons as the coach at NAIA program Langston University in Oklahoma. She previously coached at USC and was coach and general manager of the Phoenix Mercury, reaching the WNBA Finals in 1998.
This will be the third pairing of Miller and Cal State LA athletic director Mike Garrett. He was the athletic director at USC when she was a player and hired her to the Langston job while serving as AD there.
"I've known Cheryl as a player, coach and general manager for more than 20 years. She is a world-class talent," Garrett said in a statement. "I came to Cal State LA to win national championships, and Cheryl has done just that. She knows how to get us to where we intend to go."
Miller won two national titles as a player at USC and a gold medal in the 1984 Olympics.
She was inducted into the Naismith Memorial Basketball Hall of Fame in 2009. Her brother, Indiana Pacers great Reggie Miller, was enshrined in 2012.
