McDonald's All-American Lindsey Corsaro has joined the exodus from Kentucky's women's basketball team.
Corsaro, a 6-foot guard from Roncalli (Indianapolis) High School and the No. 35 prospect in the espnW Top 100, has decided to reopen her recruitment after signing a national letter of intent to Kentucky in November. The school confirmed to the Lexington Herald-Leader that Corsaro had been released from her scholarship.
The news came one day after Wildcats freshman Batouly Camara said she planned to transfer and 2017 recruit Madison Treece reopened her recruitment.
And that's just the tail end of the shocking trend that has seen eight current or future players have a change of heart.
It started in October, when sophomore Chrishae Rowe, a transfer from Oregon, was dismissed by coach Matthew Mitchell for failing to uphold the program's standards. Then, junior Linnae Harper, who had earned all-SEC defensive honors as a sophomore, left Lexington and landed at Ohio State. In November, days before the start of the season, freshman Morgan Rich hit the road for Oklahoma. Finally, junior Kyvin Goodin-Rogers transferred to Western Kentucky. After the season, little-used junior college transfer Ivana Jakubcova also opted to leave.
Mitchell said Wednesday he takes full responsibility for what has happened, "100 percent."
"All responsibility for what has happened falls on my shoulders, 100 percent," Mitchell said Wednesday. "We need to make improvements."
Corsaro's decision means only Chanin Scott, a 6-foot forward at Myers Park (Charlotte, N.C.) High School remains in Mitchell's 2016 class. Kentucky returns six players from this season's 25-8 team and, in addition to Scott, adds Cincinnati transfer Makenzie Cann. That makes an eight-player roster.
The activity hasn't been isolated to the players, either. It was learned this week that assistant coach Tamika Williams-Jeter resigned from her position. That news came less than two weeks after the school announced that it was not renewing the contract of assistant coach Adeniyi Amadou.
Williams-Jeter, a former Connecticut standout, joined Mitchell's staff in 2014. Her contract was set to run through June 30.
