Star guard Lexie Brown granted release by Maryland

Junior guard Lexie Brown was granted her release by Maryland on Tuesday.

"We appreciate all of Lexie's contributions these past two years to our program," coach Brenda Frese said in a statement. "With two Final Four appearances, a Big Ten regular season and tournament championship, it's been an incredible ride. We wish Lexie nothing but happiness and success in her future."

Brown, who helped the Terrapins advance to the Final Four for the second straight season, where they lost to eventual champion UConn, averaged 13.3 points per game last season. She earned All-Big Ten First Team and Associated Press All-American Third Team honors.

"I want to thank Coach Frese, the staff and my teammates for two great seasons at the University of Maryland," Brown said in the statement. "After talking with my family, I thought it was in my best interest to continue my education and pursue playing basketball at a university closer to my home. I truly enjoyed the friendships that I made and the outstanding support of the great Terp fans during my time in College Park."

Brown is from Suwanee, Georgia. Her father is former NBA player Dee Brown, who played for the Celtics, Raptors and Magic in his 12-season career.
