Joni Crenshaw named Georgia's 2nd full-time coach in school history

ATHENS, Ga. -- Joni Crenshaw, Andy Landers' top assistant the past three years, has been named to succeed him as the Georgia women's basketball coach.

Georgia athletic director Greg McGarity said Crenshaw was selected as only the second full-time coach in school history.

McGarity said Sunday that Crenshaw brings "character, experience and a tireless energy" to the job.

Landers retired on March 16 after 36 seasons. He was 862-299 at Georgia, including five Final Four appearances. He was inducted into the Women's Basketball Hall of Fame in 2007.

Crenshaw joined Landers' staff in 2011 after working at LSU, Alabama, Louisiana Tech and Troy. She was a two-year starter at Alabama.

Landers said Sunday the program "is in great hands" with Crenshaw.

"Coach Landers recruited me in high school, and once I got into the profession, we developed a friendship and a relationship," Crenshaw said after being introduced Monday. "When he called asked me to be a part of his staff, I jumped at the opportunity, never knowing I'd have this chance today.

"It's been an absolute privilege to stand beside him every day. The trust and responsibility he gave to me during my four years as an assistant spoke volumes to the belief he had in me, and that's what fuels me."
