Irish recruits chosen for USA U18 team

Two players who are planning to suit up for Notre Dame were among the 12 players selected to the USA Basketball U18 national team on Monday night.

Brianna Turner, a three-time USA Basketball gold medalist who will heading to South Bend this fall, will team up with future teammate Marina Mabrey, a senior-to-be at Manasquan (New Jersey), on Team USA for the 2014 FIBA Americas U18 Championship in Colorado Springs, Colo., from Aug. 6-10.

In addition to Turner, two other three-time USA Basketball gold medalists, Recee' Caldwell (UCLA) and A'ja Wilson (South Carolina), also were named to the team.

The team is evenly split between members of the 2014 and 2015 classes.

Joining Turner, Caldwell and Wilson from the 2014 class are Ariel Atkins (Texas), Paris Kea (Vanderbilt) and Mariya Moore (Louisville).

Joining Mabrey from the 2015 class are Napheesa Collier (Connecticut), Jessica Shepard (Nebraska), Teaira McCowan (undeclared), Beatrice Mompremier (undeclared) and Destinee Walker (undeclared).

"I think it's a great team," said South Carolina coach Dawn Staley, who will serve as head coach of the U18 team. "To be quite honest, it was a great trials. It's unfortunate that we couldn't take all 29 players, because they all brought something different to the table and could have very easily been on this basketball team. But, the 12 that they picked are very, very talented. They're very versatile. I think they'll perform well in our tournament, and I'm looking forward to working with them on a daily basis."
