Drake Johnson has torn ACL

College Football, Michigan Wolverines

Michigan reserve running back Drake Johnson will miss the remainder of the season after tearing the ACL in his left knee during Saturday's win against Central Michigan.

Johnson, a redshirt freshman, had been listed as Michigan's No. 2 running back behind senior Fitzgerald Toussaint. He made his collegiate debut against Central Michigan and rushed for nine yards on two carries, in addition to making a tackle on special teams.

"You just hate it for Drake, but he's tough as anyone on this football team, and he will make it back from this," Michigan coach Brady Hoke said Monday in a prepared statement.

Because the 6-foot, 213-pound Johnson has used his redshirt year, he would need to seek NCAA approval to retain this season for his eligibility.

Sophomore Justice Hayes, junior Thomas Rawls and freshmen Derrick Green and De'Veon Smith will back up Toussaint this week as Michigan hosts Notre Dame on Saturday night. Green led Michigan with 58 yards and a touchdown on 11 carries against Central Michigan.
