Andrews leads Western Kentucky past La.-Monroe

MONROE, La. -- Antonio Andrews ran for 155 yards on 27 carries and had two touchdowns to lead Western Kentucky to a 31-10 victory over Louisiana-Monroe on Thursday night.

Western Kentucky (4-2, 1-1 Sun Belt) scored on its first two possessions, with Brandon Doughty throwing a 33-yard scoring pass to Willie McNeal and a 17-yarder to Leon Allen.

Doughty was 24 of 36 for 370 yards, an FBS school record for Western Kentucky.

"I thought it was a great win for us," Western Kentucky coach Bobby Petrino said. "Our guys have a lot of poise and I think it showed up in the third and fourth quarter. We were into it and the defense got them stopped and settled down in the second half."

Louisiana-Monroe (2-4, 1-2) scored 10 straight points after falling behind 14-10. Jyruss Edwards scored from a yard out and Justin Manton made a 34-yard field goal midway through the second quarter.

The Hilltoppers put it out of reach in the third quarter, outscoring the Warhawks 10-0 on Andrews' 6-yard touchdown run and Garrett Schwettman's 22-yard field goal. Allen added a late 5-yard touchdown run.

"Offensively, we put some drives together," Petrino said. "Our young receivers stepped up and made some plays. It was good to see. We felt like we were executing well in the first half. We just dropped a couple of balls that could have been touchdowns and gave up a couple of plays."

Andrews leads the nation with 882 yards rushing and nine rushing touchdowns.

"I don't even think we are close where we need to be," Petrino said. "We need to be able to expect to score every time we take the field. That is where I want to be on offense and we are not there yet. We are getting better though. We are getting closer."

Doughty was 24 of 36 for 370 yards, an FBS school record for Western Kentucky.

The Hilltoppers play host to Louisiana-Lafayette next week, while the Warhawks hit the road to face Texas State.
