Denard Robinson starts at RB

ANN ARBOR, Mich. -- Denard Robinson started against Iowa on Saturday in his final home game at Michigan, but the senior quarterback played at a new position -- running back.

While the Wolverines added Robinson's playmaking ability in the backfield, they lost junior running back Fitzgerald Toussaint, who was carted off the field with his left leg immobilized in a brace during the first quarter of Michigan's 42-17 win.

Michigan coach Brady Hoke said after the game Toussaint was at the hospital and in surgery, but did not want to go into more detail because he wasn't sure if Toussaint's mother had been informed.

Doctors said Toussaint has a "lower extremity" injury, and it appeared his left ankle was being worked on. The hospital said Toussaint's condition is "good."

Toussaint had just run an option play and was hit as he was close to running out of bounds. He immediately went to the ground and was on the field for several minutes before trainers boarded him up and put him on the cart.

Toussaint had three carries for 31 yards Saturday. A 1,000-yard rusher last season, Toussaint had gained 483 yards and scored five touchdowns this season.

Robinson had missed the past two games with an ulnar nerve injury in his right elbow, which made it difficult for him to hold or grip a football correctly. He first injured the nerve against Illinois on Oct. 13, but returned to the game. He reinjured the elbow in the second quarter of a 23-9 loss to Nebraska on Oct. 27.

Robinson finished with a team-high 98 rushing yards on 13 carries, and added 24 yards on two receptions.

Robinson has 4,273 yards rushing in his career with 41 touchdowns and 18 100-yard games. He has also thrown for 6,250 yards and 49 touchdowns. He holds the Big Ten quarterback rushing record and Michigan's career total offense record with 10,547 yards.

Devin Gardner, who started the past two games at quarterback, completing 28 of 47 passes for 520 yards, four touchdowns and two interceptions, picked up the start for his third straight game. Gardner finished with 314 yards passing and three touchdowns, and added three rushing scores. Robinson also lined up at quarterback in the first series.

Michigan was without sophomore linebacker Desmond Morgan. Morgan, who is tied for second on the Wolverines with 67 tackles, was out due to injury.
