Ohio State-Georgia series canned

Ohio State has canceled a home-and-home series with Georgia because of the upcoming Big Ten/Pac-12 scheduling partnership.

Georgia athletic director Greg McGarity told reporters Thursday at the SEC spring meetings that Ohio State backed out of an agreement to play the Bulldogs in 2020 and 2021. The Big Ten/Pac-12 partnership, which ultimately will have 12 annual matchups between conference teams, is set to begin in 2017, although Ohio State athletic director Gene Smith told ESPN.com the Buckeyes likely won't begin participating until 2018.

The schools didn't have a contract for the 2020-21 games, but rather an agreement to try to schedule games for those years. The agreement would be null and void if dates to play were not reached by June 30, 2012. Ohio State sent Georgia a letter this month informing the Bulldogs it would not be able to confirm dates, effectively nullifying the agreement.

Ohio State typically plays one major conference team outside the Big Ten per year, and sometimes two.
