ANN ARBOR, Mich. -- Michigan safety Josh Furman has been suspended from the football team and is due in court April 23 to face one misdemeanor count each of domestic violence, assault and battery and illegal entry, court records show.

Furman was arrested Feb. 11 by the Ann Arbor Police Department and was arraigned the next day.

"It's kind of a goofy case where everyone involved, they are all friends and know each other," said Furman's attorney, Gerry Mason.

Mason said Furman, who declined to speak with ESPN.com through his attorney, is cooperating with the prosecutor's office and the police department.

"He misses his team," Mason said. "He just wants to be a student-athlete and get good grades."

Furman, a redshirt sophomore, made 10 tackles last season, mostly as a special teams gunner on punt coverage.

"Josh was suspended indefinitely from team activities as soon as we became aware of the report," coach Brady Hoke said in a statement. "These are serious allegations. We will allow the judicial process to run its course before making a final determination on his status with the program."

Mason said he believes his client didn't commit a crime.

"I think it'll get cleared up," Mason said.

If found guilty, Furman could receive 90 days in jail and/or a $500 fine for the illegal entry charge and 93 days in jail and/or a $500 fine for both the domestic violence and assault and battery charges, per court records.

A message left with the Washtenaw County Prosecutor's Office was not immediately returned.
