Joyner: Ohio State is one of seven close-but-no-CFP teams

College Football, Ohio State Buckeyes, USC Trojans

A few weeks ago, we took a look at the only 11 teams that actually could get to the 2016 College Football Playoff.

But what about Ohio State, you might have wondered? Or USC? And isn't Ole Miss the answer to Alabama's SEC dominance?

Glad you asked. Here's a rundown of the seven teams that were closest to making that 11-team cut as a legit CFP contender -- but had just enough flaws to fall short.

Iowa

Hawkeyes fans, cover your ears. The truth is, Iowa's 2015 success was largely a fluke. And even though Kirk Ferentz's team should be solid again in 2016, don't expect a playoff berth. Read

Michigan State

Yes, Michigan State was great in 2015. But a shaky passing game, subpar ground game, weak secondary and bad special teams will keep the Spartans from national title contention in 2016. Read

Ohio State

Considering how much talent the Buckeyes lost and how tough their schedule is, it's hard to imagine the Buckeyes earning a spot in the 2016 College Football Playoff. Read

Ole Miss

The Rebels did sign a talented recruiting class, but there are too many inconsistencies -- in addition to a difficult schedule -- for them to land in the College Football Playoff. Read

TCU

Losing your top playmakers and most of your offensive line is tough in any league. But in the Big 12, where shootouts are common, TCU will struggle to win games, much less make the CFP. Read

UNC

North Carolina won 11 games last season for the first time since 1997, but the numbers suggest the Tar Heels' questionable defense will keep them from improving upon that mark. Read

USC

USC is loaded with NFL prospects, but the talented Trojans have questions on offense and defense and a brutal schedule. USC might win the Pac-12 title, but it won't reach the CFP. Read
