Ex-Boise QB Ryan Finley headed to NC State as graduate transfer

Former Boise State quarterback Ryan Finley will transfer as a graduate to NC State to reunite with a former coach.

Finley, who will have two years of remaining eligibility and can compete in 2016, played under new NC State quarterbacks coach and offensive coordinator Eliah Drinkwitz at Boise State. Drinkwitz held the same positions with the Broncos in 2015 when Finley was the opening-day starter after emerging from a preseason quarterback competition.

In three games as the Broncos' starter last season, the 6-foot-4, 200-pound Finley was 46-of-70 passing with a touchdown and four interceptions. A broken ankle suffered in the third game opened the door for Brett Rypien, who started the Broncos' final 10 games and was the All-Mountain West first-team quarterback as a true freshman.

Shortly after Boise State concluded its 2016 spring practice, Finley announced his intention to transfer and ultimately decided to follow Drinkwitz to NC State.

The Wolfpack are in the midst of replacing two-year starter Jacoby Brissett, a third-round selection of the New England Patriots. Redshirt sophomore Jalan McClendon is the only other quarterback on the roster to have thrown a pass last season. In eight appearances, he completed eight of 14 attempts for 69 yards.

Senior center Joseph Scelfo, formerly of South Alabama, also was announced as a graduate transfer.
