George O'Leary to serve as UCF interim AD through end of 2015

UCF has gone with an unconventional choice to serve as interim athletics director: football coach George O'Leary.

The school announced Tuesday that O'Leary would fill the role through the end of 2015, after Todd Stansbury became athletics director at Oregon State last week. O'Leary, going into his 12th season as football coach, called the appointment "another great adventure."

"I love UCF and want to help us get better across the board," O'Leary said. "I have a great interest in the total package as far as UCF is concerned."

President John Hitt, who made the appointment, said: "George's leadership and knowledge of athletics -- which includes programs beyond football -- will keep UCF moving forward academically, competitively and in the community. His national connections will also help us continue building the Knights' reputation around the country."

As for juggling football responsibilities along with AD duties, Hitt said: "George believes, as do I, that our strong athletics and university staffs will ensure he is successful on and off the field."

UCF has won two straight American Athletic Conference football titles under O'Leary. In 2014-15, UCF won seven AAC championships. Though former coaches have gone on to become athletic directors, it is rare for an acting football coach to serve as athletic director in any capacity.
