Louisville defensive end signee Devonte Fields will go to trial for misdemeanor assault in June after failing to reach an agreement to dismiss his charge.
Fields, the former Big 12 Defensive Player of the Year at TCU, was charged with assault causing bodily injury to a family member last July after allegedly hitting an ex-girlfriend. His trial has been scheduled for June 17.
Fields has been taking anger management courses in an effort to reach an agreement to reduce or dismiss the charge and is to complete those courses on June 24. The Class A misdemeanor is punishable by up to one year in jail and a $4,000 fine.
A spokesperson for the Tarrant County District Attorney's office confirmed the trial date but declined to comment further on the case. Dismissing the charge is solely at the prosecutor's discretion due to the county's "no-drop" policy for family violence cases.
Fields was dismissed from TCU last August following his assault arrest and spent a year at Trinity Valley Community College in Athens, Texas, where he was ESPN's No. 2-rated junior college recruit. Despite the fact that his case remained unresolved, Fields signed with Louisville in February and plans to enroll in July.
A Louisville spokesperson said the school won't comment on any pending legal matter at this time.
