Why Mizzou won't win SEC East for third straight season

College Football, Missouri Tigers

This is the fifth in a series of articles about teams from each of the Power 5 conferences that will be surprisingly better or worse than currently expected.

When the Missouri Tigers moved to the SEC for the 2012 season, many thought the program would need a few years before moving to conference title contention. That assessment proved to be off the mark, as Missouri has posted two of the top three single-season win totals in the program's history over the past two seasons.

That success has caused a change in this program's perception, but Missouri's two-year reign as the SEC East champs is actually about to end.

Here are 10 reasons Missouri won't win the SEC East in 2015.

(Note: Unless otherwise specified, the metrics referenced below are from games against Power 5 opponents and the rankings indicate Missouri's placement among the 65 Power 5 teams.)

1. QB Maty Mauk is trending down

Mauk did a good job last season in many ways, but the end result of his efforts was a 53.5 Total QBR mark that ranked 11th among SEC quarterbacks. Things are not looking up, as personnel changes -- more on this below -- have led to a lack of chemistry between Mauk and his receivers that resulted in some terrible practices and a sub-par spring game.
