Ten reasons Georgia Tech can win the ACC

College Football, Georgia Tech Yellow Jackets

One of the most entertaining facets of any college football season is seeing teams surprisingly play above or below expectation levels.

So which teams are most likely to surprise in 2015?

To answer this, we will be taking a look this week at one team from each of the Power 5 conferences that will most likely be better or worse than is currently expected.

In the ACC, Georgia Tech is coming off of a season that saw it win 11 games for only the fifth time in school history. Despite this success, the Yellow Jackets are still generally being considered the third best team in the conferenceĀ and as not likely to play in one of the major bowl games.

That perception is understandable given that Georgia Tech is the only Power 5 team to lose all of its starters at running back, wide receiver and tight end from the 2014 season, but here are 10 reasons this could be an ACC championship-caliber campaign for the Yellow Jackets.

1. A potential superstar in Justin Thomas
Head coach Paul Johnson has said that if he had his choice of only one player returning from last year, it would be Thomas. It's easy to see why Johnson would say that, as Thomas led ACC passers in Total QBR over the second half of the season and ranked fifth nationally in Total QBR against Power 5 teams over the entire 2014 campaign (83.0). Thomas could end up as the best quarterback in a conference that is not lacking in talent at the position.
