Cactus Bowl moving to Chase Field for next three seasons

The Cactus Bowl is moving to Chase Field, home of the Arizona Diamondbacks, for the next three seasons, sources told ESPN.

The Cactus Bowl had been held at Sun Devil Stadium in Tempe, Arizona, since 2006, but it had to be moved for the next two seasons because of Arizona State's stadium reconstruction. The bowl had previously been held at the Diamondbacks' home ballpark in downtown Phoenix from 2000 through 2005.

The Cactus Bowl's move to Phoenix from Tempe is for at least the next three seasons, but there is an option to extend the game there past 2017, sources said.

The Cactus Bowl will be the fourth bowl game held at a Major League Baseball stadium. The others: the Pinstripe Bowl (Yankee Stadium), St. Pete Bowl (Tropicana Field, Tampa Bay Rays) and Miami Beach Bowl (Marlins Park, Miami Marlins).

The Cactus Bowl pairs teams from the Big 12 and Pac-12. After the College Football Playoff semifinals and New Year's Six bowls are filled, the Cactus Bowl gets the fifth selection from the Big 12 and sixth selection from the Pac-12.

The Cactus Bowl also considered the University of Phoenix Stadium in Glendale and Arizona Stadium in Tucson, but both those sites are hosting or are in line to host other bowl games.

University of Phoenix Stadium will host the Fiesta Bowl and College Football Playoff National Championship this coming season, while Arizona Stadium is expected to host the inaugural Arizona Bowl this season. The Arizona Bowl applied with the NCAA for certification last month and is expected to be approved in the next few weeks.

The Cactus Bowl, which began in 1989 as the Copper Bowl, was held in Tucson from 1989 through 1999 and then at Chase Field from 2000 through 2005. The Fiesta Bowl moved to University of Phoenix Stadium after a 36-year run at Sun Devil Stadium (1971 to 2006).
