Jeremy Johnson named Auburn starting QB after strong spring

College Football, Auburn Tigers

Jeremy Johnson was the strong front-runner all along, and Auburn coach Gus Malzahn made it official Monday by naming him as the Tigers' starting quarterback for the 2015 season.

Johnson, a 6-foot-5, 230-pound junior, was Nick Marshall's backup each of the last two seasons and secured the starting job with a solid spring practice.

Malzahn tweeted Monday that "everyone in our program" is confident in Johnson.

Johnson worked with the first-team offense in Saturday's spring game and completed 14-of-22 passes for 252 yards and two touchdowns.

One of his goals was becoming a more vocal leader, and Auburn's staff was pleased with the strides Johnson made in that area. He has exceptional arm strength, and the Tigers want to capitalize on that by making more explosive plays in the passing game.

Johnson played in seven games last season and started the opener against Arkansas when Marshall was suspended for the first half.

Against the Hogs, Johnson was 12-of-16 for 243 yards and two touchdowns, all in the first half, and was especially effective throwing the ball down the field, which may be a glimpse of what to expect from the Auburn offense in 2015.
