Philip Nelson avoids prison time

College Football, Minnesota Golden Gophers

MANKATO, Minn. -- Former University of Minnesota quarterback Philip Nelson won't serve any time in prison for an assault that seriously injured a former Minnesota State football player.

Nelson was sentenced Monday to 100 hours of community service for his part in a fight May 11 outside a Mankato nightclub that left Isaac Kolstad with a brain injury. Nelson got credit for two days he's already served in jail.

The Star Tribune reports Nelson apologized in court to Kolstad. Nelson maintained he doesn't remember kicking Kolstad and said he wants to take responsibility for his actions.

Under a plea deal in January, Nelson agreed to plead guilty to misdemeanor fifth-degree assault.

The Free Press of Mankato reports Kolstad gave a victim impact statement at Nelson's sentencing. Kolsad said his life has been "changed forever."
