RB Carson a big addition for Oklahoma St.

College Football, Georgia Bulldogs, Oklahoma State Cowboys

Oklahoma State filled a major need by signing running back Chris Carson on Wednesday.

Carson, ranked as one of the nation's top junior college backs, had previously committed to his homestate Georgia Bulldogs. He played for Butler (Kan.) Community College last season, where he ran for 994 yards and nine touchdowns. The Cowboys kicked standout Tyreek Hill off the team after he was arrested following a domestic violence incident, and Desmond Roland was a senior, leaving the team thin at running back.

Oklahoma State coach Mike Gundy said he felt good about his chances of getting the 6-foot-2, 200-pound Carson after his visit.

"He's mature," Gundy said. "He's not quite 21 years old, and so he understands a little more than high school players do, and I think he saw the opportunity here to better pursue his degree. He has a goal someday of playing in the NFL and he felt like he could make that happen quicker at Oklahoma State than at any other school."

Darrion Daniels, a defensive tackle from Dallas, is the star of the recruiting class. His father, Tony, played football for Texas Tech and the Green Bay Packers.

"He's a great competitor," Gundy said. "He's going to come in ready to play. He's 300-plus pounds, so my guess is that once June, July and August roll around, he'll be around 315. He's already strong for a young man, and he's only 17."

Of the 22 signees, six are from junior colleges and two are transfers. The Cowboys also got late commitments from offensive lineman Marcus Keyes of Port Allen, Louisiana, and running back Jeff Carr of Temple (Texas) High School.

Overall, Gundy was pleased with the group. He said he wasn't worried about the fact that the class doesn't have the hype or high national rankings of some past ones during his 10-year stay.

"We've addressed needs more so in this class than any class since I've been the head coach here," he said.
